LIBRARY ASSISTANT I


📚 Now Hiring: Library Assistant I

Do you enjoy helping people, working with technology, and connecting the community with information and resources? The Wahoo Public Library is seeking a friendly, organized, and customer-focused individual to join our team as a Library Assistant I. This position plays a vital role in providing outstanding service to library patrons and supporting the daily operations of our community library.

📖 About the Role:

Under the direction of the Library Director, the Library Assistant I supervises and performs library services, manages evening and weekend operations, and assists patrons with circulation, reference, and technology needs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing exceptional customer service to library patrons
  • Managing circulation desk functions including checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, and collecting fines
  • Answering reference questions and helping patrons locate books, materials, and online resources
  • Assisting patrons with computers, electronic resources, and basic technology questions
  • Cataloging new and donated library materials
  • Maintaining library collections through shelving, organizing, mending, and processing materials
  • Supervising library operations during assigned evening and weekend shifts
  • Monitoring library equipment and ensuring compliance with library policies
  • Opening and closing the library and assisting with daily operational tasks
  • Supporting special projects, programs, and other library activities as assigned

✅ Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • College-level coursework in liberal arts, library science, or a related field preferred
  • Experience in clerical, customer service, or library work preferred
  • Experience using computers and common office software applications
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple responsibilities

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with patrons, coworkers, and

  • Knowledge of basic library procedures and services
  • Ability to learn library classification systems and online catalog systems
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to remain calm and professional when addressing patron concerns
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A positive attitude and commitment to public service

Successful candidates should demonstrate:

  • Starting Pay: $20.24
  • Top Pay: $26.31
  • Nine-Step Pay Plan
