Wahoo Police Facility

The Need for a Modern Facility

Wahoo’s Police Department has not been updated since the 1950s, leaving the facility ill-equipped to meet the needs of current and future staff to serve and protect the community.

Existing Conditions

Ongoing operational and health hazards exist throughout the facility.

  • Deteriorating ceiling and floor tiles contain asbestos.
  • Many repairs are needed, but the quick fix options do not resolve the long-term needs of the department.
  • Discoloration around HVAC ducts raise air quality and contamination concerns.
  • Loose wires hang near hot furnaces and in workout areas. Some outlets have exposed or uncovered wiring. The purpose of all wires is unknown, making maintenance risky.

Building design and infrastructure do not meet today’s standards for workplace efficiency, controlled access, and safety.

  • Outdated systems require added effort to ensure security and confidentiality.
  • There is limited space for confidential conversations and sensitive materials.
  • Wahoo’s police force has grown, and there is no longer enough space for officers to have designated areas to conduct their work.

The facility lacks ADA accessibility.

  • The building lacks an elevator, and the lower level can only be accessed by descending steep stairs that have tile damage.
  • The basement-level storm shelter also does not meet current building safety standards based on initial studies of the space.

The building conditions undermine employee morale, recruitment, and public trust.

  • Wahoo competes with larger metro areas where they may be paid more and work in modern, well-equipped facilities.
  • The training space is not adequate to effectively fulfill the increased training requirements.

Essential Features of a New Facility

  • An updated and expanded facility – A necessary investment in the safety, professional, and long-term success of Wahoo’s Police Department.
  • Long-term value – An updated facility will enhance safety by removing the asbestos, upgrading security measures, and creating a functional space for our law enforcement to conduct their work.
  • Enhanced professionalism – A modern facility that reflects the high standards of the Wahoo Police Department.
  • Accessible to all – Being fully compliant with ADA requirements will serve every member of the community.

What Will the Future Look Like?

The City of Wahoo’s Facilities Committee envisions a new, modern police facility, as part of a greater Public Safety Center, providing officers the space and resources to better serve the community while coordinating with Fire and EMS Departments.
